ABOUT THE COURSE

The course objectives are to introduce the concepts, procedures and methodology of Formal Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), and to develop a critical awareness of factors, which affect the use of EIA as part of project management.

The need to avoid adverse impacts and to ensure long term benefits led to the concept of sustainability. This has become accepted as an essential feature of development if the aim of increased well being and greater equity in fulfilling basic needs to be met for this and future generations. In order to predict environmental impacts of any development activity and to provide an opportunity to mitigate negative impacts and enhance positive impacts, the environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure was developed in the 1970s.This course aims to assist staff from different disciplines and backgrounds to incorporate environmental considerations into planning, designing, implementing and regulating programs, plans and projects: thus leading to sustainable development.

Course Objectives:
By the end of this COINMAC training course, participants will be able to:

  • Introduce concepts of ecology and the significance of environmental impact of development projects.
  • Identify the origins and commonly used definitions of EIA and EIS, and set out the procedure and methodology that characterize current EIA and EIS practice.
  • Locate the EIA process in relation to the “project cycle”.
  • Examine methods used to express environmental impact in terms of economic values.
  • Identify ways in which environmental policy, and the legal, social and institutional framework within which it is implemented, impinges upon EIA, with a particular reference to developing countries.
  • Introduce the basic requirements and tools for applying ISO 14001
